“Jackson Brodie, tidligere politimand og privatdetektiv, er taget til Fringe Festival i Edinburgh sammen med kæresten Julia, der er skuespiller. Her bliver han modvilligt og helt tilfældigt trukket ind i en række komplicerede begivenheder.

I en bilkø overværer han et brutalt overfald begået mod en bilist. Er det blot en vanvittig mand, der går amok, eller er der et motiv bag overfaldet? Blandt vidnerne til overfaldet er Martin Canning, også kendt som forfatteren Alex Blake. Martin er en genert og tilbageholdende type, og ved at kaste en taske efter voldsmanden forhindrer han, at overfaldet udvikler sig. Gloria Hatter er også på gerningsstedet. Gloria er gift med Graham, den store byggematador. Hvad Graham ikke ved, er, at hans liv er ved at falde fra hinanden; Gloria vil forlade ham efter 39 års ægteskab og samtidig afsløre hans anløbne forretningsmetoder.

Disse menneskers tilstedeværelse på gerningsstedet er ikke tilfældig, og den sexede vicekriminalkommissær Louise Monroe, som leder efterforskningen, gør brug af Jackson Brodies erfaringer.

Med sin forrige roman “Familiehistorier” udfordrede Kate Atkinson spændingsgenren og tilførte den sit meget personlige præg. Hun fortsætter kunsten i “En god gerning”.
